Rules of the Road
As more cyclists take to the streets, everyone – cyclists and motorists – have to learn to share our roads. Cyclists have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers. The Motor Vehicle Act and City by-laws apply to bicycles too.
The City of Vancouver is committed to making cycling easier and safer, and is making many improvements for cyclists. Learn more.
- Know and obey the rules of the road.
- Stop at stop signs. Not stopping at stop signs is illegal and a violation of Section 186 of B.C.’s Motor Vehicle Act. Bicycles must come to a full stop at a stop sign before entering an intersection when a stop sign is present. The Vancouver Police Department may issue a Provincial violation ticket, which carries a fine of $167. Watch this video to learn more.
